Joint Pain
Joint pain is a prevalent symptom among those suffering from hemochromatosis. This discomfort is not limited to one joint and can affect multiple areas, leading to significant discomfort and restricted mobility. The excess iron in the body can lead to inflammation in the joints, causing pain and swelling.
Over time, this can evolve into arthritis, a condition characterized by joint inflammation, pain, and stiffness. The development of arthritis further exacerbates mobility issues, making it difficult for individuals to perform daily tasks and maintain an active lifestyle. [2]
Abdominal Pain
Abdominal discomfort or pain is another symptom commonly associated with hemochromatosis. This pain can vary in intensity and may be accompanied by bloating, indigestion, or a feeling of fullness. The accumulation of iron in the liver, one of the organs most affected by hemochromatosis, can cause liver enlargement and discomfort in the abdominal area.
Additionally, the pancreas may also be affected, leading to pancreatitis—inflammation of the pancreas. This can cause severe abdominal pain and contribute to the development of diabetes by impairing the pancreas’s ability to produce insulin effectively.
