Mouth and Tongue Changes
Changes in the mouth and tongue, such as swelling, soreness, or a smooth appearance, can signify iron deficiency anemia. These symptoms may include dry mouth, sore red cracks at the mouth’s corners, or mouth ulcers. The tongue might appear pale or even smooth, losing its normal texture and color due to the lack of iron.
These oral symptoms often accompany the fatigue and weakness of iron deficiency. If you’re experiencing these changes without another clear cause, it might be a clue to check your iron levels.
Restless Legs Syndrome
Iron deficiency has been linked to restless legs syndrome (RLS), a condition that causes an irresistible urge to move the legs, often accompanied by uncomfortable sensations. Symptoms are typically more severe at night, which can interfere with sleep. Individuals with iron deficiency anemia are six times more likely to experience RLS, suggesting a strong connection between the two conditions.
This relationship might be due to the role of iron in the brain’s dopamine pathways, which are thought to be involved in RLS. If you find yourself struggling with restless legs, especially in conjunction with other symptoms of iron deficiency, it’s a good idea to get your iron levels checked. [4]
