Brittle or Spoon-Shaped Nails
Koilonychia, or spoon-shaped nails, is often associated with iron deficiency anemia. Initially, the nails might appear more brittle than usual, chipping and cracking easily. Over time, they can become so thin that they become concave, resembling a spoon. This symptom is relatively rare but clearly indicates severe iron deficiency.
This nail condition reflects the broader impacts of iron deficiency on the body’s ability to maintain healthy tissues, including the nails. If you notice significant changes in your nails’ appearance, it’s worth considering whether iron deficiency could be the cause. [5]
