10 Natural Blood Thinners
Turmeric
Turmeric powder is a popular spice in many soups, however, it is more than a spice.
Turmeric contains curcumin, a polyphenol that gives curry its yellow color. Investigators say turmeric owes its therapeutic usefulness to this compound. They found that daily consumption of turmeric confers blood-thinning properties.
The science behind its anticoagulant properties is the inhibition of a coagulation factor.
However, authors of a 2019 study warn of possible undesirable interactions when turmeric is combined with antiplatelet medications. They strongly plead for caution.
Turmeric powder could be used in soups or mixed with hot water to make tea. [5] [6]
Ginger
Ginger and turmeric belong to the same family and both are spices. Just like turmeric, ginger has been used for many medicinal purposes. Antiplatelet properties are one.
Its root has salicylates, the active ingredient in aspirin – a popular blood thinner. Salicylates are effective in preventing stroke and heart attack. It does this by lowering thromboxane; a hormone that causes platelet aggregation. Salicylates are also found in avocados, chilies and cherries.
This laboratory study concluded that the aqueous extract of ginger could be used as a supportive therapy to improve or prevent cardiovascular disorders.
An analysis of 20 ginger constituents established that 5 of these constituents exhibited antiplatelet activities at low concentrations. Their potencies are even reported to be higher than
aspirin’s.
You could make ginger tea or even add the powder to juices, smoothies and soups to get the benefits. [7] [8]
