Garlic
Garlic is also a common spice and its medicinal benefits are too immense to ignore.
This animal study found that garlic powder inhibits thrombin in rodents. Similarly, a 2019 meta-analysis of 12 clinical trials saw garlic reduce risks of cardiovascular events by 16-40%.
However, scientists advise its discontinuation before surgery due to bleeding risk. [16]
Green Tea
Made from the leaves and buds of Camellia sinensis, green tea shows promising blood-thinning properties in human and animal studies.
A meta-analysis of 9 studies revealed that those who drank 1-3 cups of green tea per day were at a lesser risk of heart attack compared to those who drank less. And authors of this study attribute its antiplatelet and anticoagulation properties to the presence of catechin.
However, people taking warfarin aren’t advised to take green tea because it contains vitamin K, a known warfarin antagonist. [17] [18]
