High Cholesterol Foods to Avoid
Fried Foods
Frying, especially deep frying is a popular cooking method due to the appeal of fried foods. However, the changes that occur during frying make it a health risk.
During frying, trans fat forms – trans fat has been linked to various heart complications as well as metabolic issues like type 2 DM and obesity. Precisely, trans fat increases the body’s bad cholesterol and decreases the good one. [12]
Research and data suggest that people who ate the most fried foods each week were 28% more likely to have heart problems, compared with people who ate the least. [13]
However, if you must eat fried foods, healthy oils such as coconut and olive oil are good but in moderation.
Processed Meats
Processed meats such as sausage, bacon and hot dogs pose health risks largely due to the preservatives used. For example, 50g of hot dogs has been found to increase colorectal cancer by 18%. [14]
This study found that those who ate 150 grams of processed meat per week increased their risk of heart disease and death by 46% and 51%, respectively when compared to those who didn’t. [15]
As much as you can, avoid all kinds of processed meats.
