Acidity and Cancer
Yes, cancer thrives in an acidic environment but cancerous cells create this acidic environment themselves. [14]
However, the most comprehensive investigation of the relationship says there’s a possible association between an acid diet and cancer. Although, it didn’t identify any mechanism plus the findings were specific to breast cancer.
In truth, the diets recommended by the American Institute for Cancer Research and the American Cancer Society are rich in alkaline foods.
Acidity and Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
A review article in the Journal of Renal Nutrition reports a positive correlation between low low-protein diet and slower progression of CKD. [15]
A similar review declares that fruits and vegetables instead of bicarbonates have positive effects on kidney function. But a plant-based diet is just the focal point of healthy eating so it’s not certain alkaline diets have stand-alone benefits. [16]
