Alcohol Consumption
Excessive alcohol intake can lead to fluid retention and, consequently, swollen feet. Alcohol acts as a diuretic, initially promoting fluid loss, but it can also cause the body to retain excess water, leading to swelling in the feet and ankles. If the swelling persists for more than two days after consuming alcohol, it’s advisable to consult a doctor, as it may indicate an underlying issue with organs like the heart, liver, or kidneys.
Preeclampsia
Sudden and severe swelling during pregnancy may signal preeclampsia, a potentially dangerous condition. Preeclampsia is characterized by high blood pressure, protein in the urine, and excessive fluid retention. It typically occurs in the latter half of pregnancy and can progress to eclampsia, a life-threatening condition involving seizures.
Symptoms of preeclampsia include severe swelling, headaches, dizziness, nausea, vision changes, and reduced urination. If a pregnant woman experiences these signs, immediate medical attention is crucial. Prompt treatment, which may include medication and close monitoring, is essential to prevent complications for both the mother and the baby.
