Hot Weather
During hot weather, the body’s natural cooling mechanisms can contribute to swollen feet. In warm temperatures, the veins in the feet and ankles expand to facilitate heat dissipation, which can cause fluid leakage into the surrounding tissues, resulting in swelling. Additionally, fluid may accumulate in the lower extremities due to prolonged standing or sitting.
Lymphedema
Lymphedema is characterized by the buildup of lymphatic fluid, which can lead to swelling in the feet and legs. The lymphatic system is crucial in removing waste and toxins from the body. However, when lymph vessels are damaged or absent, lymphatic fluid can accumulate in the tissues, causing swelling, infection, impaired wound healing, and potential deformity.
Individuals who have undergone radiation therapy or lymph node removal during cancer treatment are at a higher risk of developing lymphedema. If swelling occurs after such procedures, prompt medical attention is crucial. [4]
