Liver Disease
Liver disease can indirectly cause swollen feet due to a lack of albumin production. Albumin is a protein that helps prevent blood from leaking out of blood vessels. When the liver is compromised, it may not produce sufficient albumin, allowing fluid to escape and accumulate in the legs and feet, leading to swelling.
Symptoms of liver disease can include jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), dark urine, easy bruising, loss of appetite, itchy skin, fatigue, nausea or vomiting, a tender and swollen abdomen, and pale, bloody, or tar-colored stools.
Kidney Disease
Impaired kidney function can contribute to fluid retention and swollen feet. When the kidneys are not functioning properly, they may be unable to effectively flush out excess fluid from the body, leading to fluid buildup and swelling in the feet and ankles.
Kidney disease may not present any noticeable symptoms until it has progressed to a severe stage and the kidneys are failing. Signs of kidney failure can include less frequent urination, shortness of breath, fatigue, chest pain, seizures, nausea, confusion, and even coma.
In summary, swollen feet can be caused by various factors, ranging from minor issues to potentially serious underlying health conditions. It’s essential to be aware of the accompanying symptoms and seek medical attention when necessary, as prompt treatment can often alleviate the swelling and address the root cause. By understanding the common causes, you can take proactive steps to manage and prevent swollen feet, ensuring better overall health and comfort. [6]
